• The direct part (i.e., achievablity of transmission at rates approaching 1 2 log2(1+ P σ z )) however does not rely on the noise being AWGN and the theorem holds for a much broader class of channels. In fact, the proof below requires only that the noise have average power σ2 z and that it is empirically uncorrelated with the input signal. Thus, the noise may be non-Gaussian, and does not even need to be statistically independent of the transmitted signal.
